3 Days in Bled

Sleep at the lake and you get what the day trippers miss: the empty shore at dawn, the lights at dusk and Bohinj without a tour bus.

3 days, 18 stops

Bled is small, and that's the point. One lake, one island, one castle, and a path around it that takes about two hours. Most visitors see it on a day trip from Ljubljana, take the photo from the same two viewpoints and leave mid-afternoon. The 5 days in Ljubljana guide does exactly that day, and it works. This guide is for the other way: sleeping at the lake.

What you get by staying is the part the buses miss: the shore at sunrise, the lights after the tour groups leave, and time for the region around it. Bled itself is a lake, a promenade, a castle and a cream cake, and an honest verdict on the cake is below. The reason for three days is what's next door: Lake Bohinj, about 40 minutes away and much wilder, the Savica waterfall, Vogel above it, and a day of old town and bees in Radovljica. Two days feels rushed, and five repeats itself unless you hike or ski seriously.

Day one is the lake (viewpoints, island, castle, cake), day two a day trip to Bohinj, day three Radovljica, the Vintgar Gorge when it's open, and the lights at the lake. It's written for November to early spring, so each stop says what's closed. Start on a Wednesday: day three then falls on a Friday, when the Beekeeping Museum (closed Mondays) is open and the lakeside Winter Fairytale stays open late. More on the country is on the Slovenia page, and for skiing in the same valley see 3 days in Kranjska Gora.

Day 1Lake Bled shore, Mlino, Grad

Day 1: Sunrise, Osojnica, the Island and the Castle

Today stays within about 3 km of your bed. In November the sun rises around 7 and sets around 4:45 pm, so do the climb in the morning light and the castle before 4. The castle closes at 6 pm from November to March, but the view is best while it's still light.

    Lake Bled at Sunrise

Stand on the lake path before anyone else does. Lake Bled sits in a basin the Bohinj glacier left behind, and the island is what remains of a rock that blocked the ice. In winter the water can drop to 4 degrees Celsius, and in very cold winters it freezes.

By the Spa Park the promenade is empty at this hour and the castle sits above you on its cliff. Sunrise is around 7 in early November and around 7:45 at New Year, so you don't need a 4 am alarm. Bring gloves and a hot drink.

This is the view from the posters. Mala Osojnica is 685 m, about 45 minutes up a steep forest path, and Velika Osojnica at 756 m is another 20 minutes beyond it. From the benches at the top you see the lake, the island, the Karavanke and the Ljubljana basin.

After rain or frost the path is slippery, so wear shoes with grip, not city trainers. If it looks icy, Ojstrica, about 20 minutes up at 611 m, has a bench and a view of the lake for far less effort.

    Pletna Boat to Bled Island

A pletna boat with a striped awning moored at a wooden landing on turquoise Lake Bled
    Photo: ateles76, CC0

The pletna is a flat-bottomed wooden boat, 7 m long, with a colorful awning, rowed standing up by a pletnar. The type goes back to 1590, and the oarsman's job passed down in the same families, since Maria Theresa gave the boat rights to farmers on poorer land. Today 23 boats work the lake from the landings at Kazina, Mlino, Vila Bled and Velika Zaka.

The island church was rebuilt in the Gothic style in 1465 and got its baroque look in the mid-17th century. A staircase of 99 stone steps leads up to it, and tradition says a groom must carry his bride up all of them if they marry here. Ring the wishing bell, look back at the lake and the castle, and catch the boat.

    Bled Castle

Bled Castle goes back to 1004, when the German king Henry II gave the estate to Bishop Albuin of Brixen, and the castle itself is named in a deed of 1011. The bishops never lived here, which is why it has no grand rooms. In 1947 the roof burned, and the restoration was finished in 1961.

Go for the terraces. The lower courtyard has the printing workshop with a replica of Gutenberg's press, where you can print your own document, and the upper courtyard has the Gothic chapel, a museum on Bled's history and a restaurant with a view over the lake. The path from the upper car park to the ticket office is steep, up to 34 degrees.

Bled Cream Cake at Park Café

The kremšnita is the reason many Slovenes drive here. It was invented at Hotel Park in 1953 by the pastry chef Ištvan Lukačević, who took the cream cake he knew from Vojvodina, in northern Serbia, and adapted it. Puff pastry, vanilla custard, whipped cream, more puff pastry and powdered sugar, cut in 7 cm squares. Reports put the total above 15 million slices.

Honest verdict: good, light and not too sweet, but a lot of what you pay for is the lakeside terrace. In an August 2024 survey Park Café charged 6.50 EUR, Slaščičarna Zima 5.20 EUR and Kavarna Šmon, away from the lake, 4.40 EUR. Try the original at Park and decide for yourself.

Order what the region is known for: a kranjska klobasa with sauerkraut, a bowl of jota, or štruklji. It has a long menu and pizza too, so stay on the Slovenian side. For a special occasion the Castle Restaurant is an alternative, and you should book.

The path around the lake is about 6 km on the flat, and after dinner it's the quiet part of the day. If you're short on time, do the east half, from Hotel Park to the Spa Park, where the festive route runs between 27 November and 10 January.

Day 2Bohinj, Ribčev Laz, UkancDay trip

Day 2: Lake Bohinj, Savica and Vogel

Bohinj is 32 km from Bled to Ukanc, 37 minutes by car, with buses via Bohinjska Bistrica. The Vogel cable car is closed for maintenance until about 1 December 2026 and the lake's panoramic boat ended its season on 1 November, so today is a lake and waterfall day. Start early: the Savica entry point closes at 4 pm in November and December, and the sun sets around 4:30.

The church by the stone bridge is Bohinj's best-known picture. It was built before 1300, so it's about 700 years old, and it's one of the finest examples of Slovenian medieval architecture and wall painting. It stands on a hill by the lake at Ribčev Laz, where the buses from Bled stop.

Look at the bridge and the church from the shore first, then go closer.

The Savica is one of the biggest waterfalls in Slovenia, 78 m high at 836 m above sea level, and A-shaped because the water arrives in two streams: one from the Triglav Lakes Valley and one through a horizontal karst cave under Pršivec. It's also the waterfall in France Prešeren's poem The Baptism at Savica.

From the car park the trail is short but has quite a few steps, so it doesn't suit strollers or wheelchairs. It's about 8 km and 15 minutes by car from Ribčev Laz. The entry point is open 9 am to 4 pm in November and December and closes in heavy rain, snow or black ice.

Lake Bohinj covers 318 hectares, which makes it the largest permanent lake in Slovenia, ringed by the mountains of Triglav National Park. Bled is a postcard, Bohinj is a landscape: no castle, no island, a lot more water.

Ukanc sits at the western end, next to the Vogel cable car. Walk the shore for 20-30 minutes, then turn back.

    Vogel Cable Car

Lake Bohinj and its valley seen from the Vogel cable car
    Photo: Qasinka, CC0

Vogel is a ski resort above the lake, opened in 1964, with 22 km of slopes and no snow cannons, because it sits on the edge of Triglav National Park. The way up is a cable car from Ukanc with a cabin every half hour, and a newer circular cabin lift on the slope between Orlove Glave and Zadnji Vogel gives a few minutes to look at the view.

The trap for this plan: the operator says the cable car is closed for extensive maintenance until about 1 December 2026. Before that date, skip this stop and walk the shore longer, or see the Mostnica Gorge under More time. After it, it's the best way to see Bohinj from above in clear weather.

  3. Taste1-1.5 hoursAbout 15-25 EUR

    Lunch in Bohinj

Bohinj has its own kitchen and a certificate, Bohinjsko, for restaurants that serve it. Hotel Kristal's Pri Lovcu restaurant is on the list for smoked venison, cottage cheese dumplings and Bohinj trout. Others are Pri Hrvatu inn, Štrud'l inn and the Zlatovčica restaurant, which does fish and Slovenian wine.

If you see mohant (a soft cheese with a strong aroma and sharp taste) or žganci (a polenta-like dish), try them.

Day 3Gorje, Radovljica, Bled

Day 3: Vintgar, Radovljica and Straža

Radovljica is only 7.6 km from Bled, 13 minutes by car, so today is relaxed. The Vintgar Gorge is open only from April to October: if you're here between November and March, skip that stop and start in Radovljica when the Beekeeping Museum opens at 10 am. It is closed on Mondays, which is another reason to hit the road on a Wednesday.

The gorge is open only from April to October, with hours that change by month: 9 am to 4 pm in April and May, 8 am to 6 pm from 6 July to 30 August, and 9 am to 3 pm from 21 September to the end of the season. The pass is sold online or at the main car park, not at the visitor centre, and a free shuttle e-bus runs from that car park. It's busiest from 10 am to 1 pm.

Straža is the hill above the lake's southeast shore, 646 m high, with an easy path through spruce, oak, linden and birch along the Bled Fitness Trail. The tourist board calls it the best viewpoint in Bled: the whole lake, the castle, the Jelovica plateau and Stol mountain.

It's also where Bled's wellness tourism began. Arnold Rikli's patients walked up here in the morning, ate their own breakfast and walked barefoot, and a monument to him stands at the top. In winter, go by 3 pm.

    Winter Fairytale on the Promenade

Bled's Christmas market is called the Winter Fairytale. It runs from the Spa Park to Hotel Park along the promenade, with wooden houses selling food, warm drinks and local crafts, plus light sculptures and photo points. Bands play on weekends.

It's a good ending: warm up with a hot drink and walk the lake once more. It's small and local, not Vienna, and that's why it works.

Struklji

Rolled dough with a filling of cottage cheese, walnuts or tarragon, boiled or baked. In Bohinj, look for cottage cheese dumplings and mavžlji with mohant.

Where to try it: Hotel Kristal's Pri Lovcu restaurant in Bohinj lists cottage cheese dumplings, and most inns have struklji as a side or a dessert.

Mohant and Bohinj Cheese

Mohant is a soft cheese with a strong aroma and a sharp taste, listed among Bohinj's specialties next to the local cheese. Look for it with mavžlji or with žganci, the polenta-like dish.

Where to try it: Restaurants with the Bohinjsko certificate.

Bohinj Trout

Trout cooked Bohinj-style, one of the valley's signature dishes. A reason to have lunch on day two, not in Bled.

Where to try it: Hotel Kristal's Pri Lovcu restaurant or the Zlatovčica restaurant in Bohinj.

Lectar Honey Gingerbread

Hand-decorated gingerbread hearts from Radovljica, the town of bees. A gift to bring home.

Where to try it: The Lectar workshop in Radovljica's old town.

Brandy, Wine and Beer

Slivovka, the plum brandy, is the traditional spirit. Regional wines include Cviček from Dolenjska and Teran from the coast, and Union and Laško are the national beers.

Where to try it: A gostilna or wine bar, or the warm-drink stalls at the Winter Fairytale.

Where to Stay in Bled

Bled is small enough that where you sleep matters less than what's around it. These are the options.

Lakeside Bled (Mlino and the promenade)

Best for: First-timers who want the lake from the window and to walk everywhere

The pletna landings are in Mlino and in front of Hotel Park, and the promenade and Winter Fairytale are on your doorstep. The east shore has the thermal springs that feed the pools at Grand Hotel Toplice, Hotel Park and Rikli Balance. The catch: the highest prices and the busiest in summer.

Bled town center and Grajska cesta

Best for: Travelers who want restaurants and a bus stop nearby

Up from the shore towards the castle: inns such as Pri Planincu, shops and the bus station. You walk down to the lake in 5-10 minutes. The catch: no lake view from the room, and the castle road is steep.

Zasip

Best for: Quiet, walkers and anyone with a car

A village on the edge of Bled, with a church on the hill above it and the trail to St Catherine. Cheaper and calmer than the lake, but it's a bus or a car ride to the shore and not much open in the evening.

Bohinj (Ribčev Laz)

Best for: Hikers and anyone who wants Bohinj more than Bled

A better base if the mountains are your reason to come: Savica is 15 minutes away by car and the lake is on the doorstep. The catch: Bled's boat, castle and cake are 30 minutes away, and winter evenings are quiet.

Can You Put Slovenia Back on the Map?

In Map Drop the countries of Europe fall one at a time and you drop each into its place - Slovenia is one of the pieces.

Play Map Drop

Before You Go

The practical stuff that makes the first day in Bled easier.

Money

Slovenia uses the euro. Cards work at the castle, hotels and most restaurants, but bring cash for the pletna boat and use an ATM in town first. Savica costs 4 EUR at the entry point.

Getting there

Ljubljana airport (LJU) is 37 km from Bled, and buses from the capital take about 75 minutes. The Lesce-Bled train station is 4 km from the lake and needs a bus or taxi on, and the line toward Jesenice has works until mid-November 2026, so check the rail timetable first. A car is handy for Bohinj and Radovljica, but buses cover the plan.

Getting around

Walk in Bled. For Bohinj, buses link Bled with Ribčev Laz, and a Bohinj 24h bus ticket for local lines costs 2 EUR. Check the Arriva timetable the evening before, since winter services are thinner.

Winter daylight and the clock

Europe went back an hour on 25 October 2026, so the sun sets around 4:45 pm in early November and around 4:15 pm in mid-December. Plan hikes and viewpoints for the morning, and use the evenings for the lake and dinner.

What's closed in winter

The Vintgar Gorge closes from November to March. On the Vršič road to the Soča valley, cars get only as far as Koča na Gozdu in winter. The Vogel cable car is closed until about 1 December 2026, the Bohinj panoramic boat ended on 1 November, and Savica closes at 4 pm in November and December. Pletna boats run when the weather permits.

Mountain safety

Paths to Osojnica, Straža and Savica can be icy after frost, with roots hidden by leaves. Wear boots with grip and carry a light. In heavy rain, snow or black ice Savica's entry point closes.

Bled Travel FAQ

Is 3 days enough for Bled?

Yes. One day covers the lake, island, castle and cream cake, the second goes to Bohinj and the third to Radovljica, Vintgar in season and the lake in the evening. For hiking or skiing you could stay longer.

Is Bled worth staying overnight, or is a day trip enough?

A day trip covers the lake, castle and cake, but you miss sunrise, the evening lights and Bohinj. One night is the minimum, and three lets you do the region slowly.

Is Bled open in winter?

Yes, the castle is open (8 am to 6 pm from November to March), pletna boats run when the weather allows, and the Winter Fairytale lights up the promenade from 27 November 2026 to 10 January 2027. The Vintgar Gorge is closed from November to March, and cars can't cross the Vršič Pass in winter.

When is the Bled Christmas market in 2026?

The Winter Fairytale runs from 27 November 2026 to 10 January 2027, from the Spa Park along the lakeside promenade to Hotel Park. It's open every day, with the longest hours on Fridays and Saturdays.

Is the Bled cream cake worth it?

Yes, once. It's light, with custard and whipped cream between puff pastry, and it was invented at Hotel Park in 1953. Part of the price is the lake view.

Is Bled or Bohinj better?

Bled has the island, the castle and the cake. Bohinj is larger, quieter and wilder, with Savica and Vogel. With three days, do both.

Is Bled expensive?

The lakeside is the priciest part. In a 2024 survey a cream cake cost 4-9 EUR depending on the cafe, the castle is 19 EUR and a pletna ride about 20 EUR. Staying in the town center or Zasip and eating at an inn brings the cost down.

How do I get from Bled to Bohinj?

By car it's 32 km, 37 minutes to Ukanc. By bus, buses run from Bled via Bohinjska Bistrica to Ribčev Laz and take longer than the drive. Check the Arriva winter timetable before you go.
